Backflow Testing & Prevention

Friday, June 10, 2016

Did you recently receive a letter from your water company requiring a backflow prevention test? If so, you are not alone. Most public buildings including businesses, apartments, condos, restaurants and other commercial facilities are required to have a backflow prevention device installed at each cross connection. These backflow valves must comply with municipal codes, and must be tested annually.

Your first thought may be, why do I need backflow preventers and annual testing? Backflow occurs when the flow of water in your plumbing systems becomes reversed, and causes your drinking water to become contaminated. To prevent this from occurring, a properly installed, tested and maintained backflow preventer will help keep a higher quality of water throughout your community.

Next, you’re probably thinking why do you have to pay for the installation and maintenance of the backflow preventer? The water utility company is responsible for the water, until it goes beyond the meter. Essentially, once the water is in your plumbing, they don’t want the water back. Your neighbors who use the same water utility would also not be very happy paying full price for re-used and contaminated water.

If you are in need to a backflow preventer installation, or an annual inspection, we have the equipment and certificated plumbers to handle the job. To schedule an appointment, call us at 717-938-2521.
