Are you struggling with an inefficient central air conditioning system that fails to combat the scorching heat and maintain a cool indoor environment? When you set your thermostat to a comfortable 75 degrees, does your air conditioner struggle all day long to achieve that temperature? Fret not, as we have three “Handy” tips to enhance the performance of your central air conditioning system, and the best part is that two of them are do-it-yourself solutions!
To maximize your air conditioner’s performance, it’s advisable to have a Handyside HVAC expert inspect, clean, and service your unit every spring. Our expertise allows us to identify any potential issues that might hinder the cooling efficiency. Consider opting for an annual HVAC maintenance contract, covering both your air conditioner and furnace, for cost savings and comprehensive service. However, if you prefer a DIY approach, here are two tasks you can undertake.
Our Handyside HVAC professionals emphasize the importance of regularly changing air filters and for good reason. Over time, these filters accumulate dust and debris, obstructing airflow and reducing cooling effectiveness. Replace your air filters monthly during periods of heavy usage. Familiarize yourself with the location of your return air filters, as they may be found either alongside the furnace or at each return air vent. Additionally, ensure thorough vacuuming of the return air vents to eliminate all accumulated dust.
Head outside to your air conditioning unit and inspect it for any obstructions such as grass, weeds, vines, or debris. While our Handyside HVAC professionals are better equipped for this task, you can still clean the condenser coils yourself. Begin by turning off the power to the unit. Prepare a soapy solution using a bottle of dish detergent that’s approximately 80 to 90% empty, filling it with water. Squirt the soapy solution to the condenser coils through the unit’s vents or caging. On most units, these coils are visible on three sides. Allow it to soak for a few minutes before using a garden hose to rinse off the soap. Watch as dirty water and debris flow away from the unit. Let the unit dry for an hour before restoring power.
Always use caution and turn off your HVAC system before working on any part of it.
If your air conditioner continues to struggle even after replacing filters and cleaning the condenser coils, it’s advisable to seek professional help for an inspection. A Handyside HVAC expert can identify and resolve any underlying problems. Alternatively, investing in an annual HVAC service contract will ensure regular maintenance, keeping your air conditioning system running smoothly while requiring only routine filter replacements. By following these three “Handy” tips, you can enhance the performance and longevity of your air conditioner, providing a cool and comfortable environment for years to come.
